Post-16 resits

Post-16 resits

Students aged 16 to 19 who wish to continue into further education (FE), but who received a grade D or lower in the outgoing GCSE English and/or Maths – or 1 to 3 in the new grading system – must continue to study these subjects. This is necessary in order to secure funding for their chosen FE course.

Students who receive grade 3 must resit the relevant GCSE. Students who receive grade 1 or 2 may instead choose an approved stepping stone subject, such as Functional Skills.

Resits for outgoing specifications

The final opportunity to resit exams for the outgoing qualifications was in June 2017. Students can now only be offered the new GCSE English and GCSE Maths qualifications that follow the 9–1 grading system, rather than A* to G. Students can resit in November or in the summer exam series.
